JOIN: June 16 HCBS Webinar

Monday, June 7, 2021

Your federal elected officials in Congress are still thinking about new ways to help our country recover from COVID-19, including helping those with disabilities who are living in home and community based settings.  For some time, advocates with disabilities have asked Congress to take action to:

  • End below minimum wage jobs for people with disabilities and modernize disability employment supports to allow for competitive, integrated employment.
  • Expand access to Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) for people with disabilities and end long waiting lists for services (currently there are almost 16,000 Iowans with disabilities on waiver waiting lists).
  • Make sure we have a stable, valued direct support workforce.
  • Meet the needs of children with disabilites in childcare and education from birth through college.
  • Guarantee infrastructure funded in these efforts is fully accessible (including technology).

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

  • Register for the June 16, 2021 Community Living Policy Center webinar on the Biden-Harris Administration's historic proposal to invest $400 billion in the Medicaid HCBS program.
  • Learn more about proposals:
  • Let your federal elected officials know why creating more access to HCBS services is so important to you (or what it would mean to lose them).
    • Email your US Senators and US Representative here, or
    • Call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 (voice) or (202) 224-3091(tty) and ask to be connected to your Senators and Representatives.
    • Leave a brief message sharing that Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) and Competitive Integrated Employment are important to you.
    • Ask to be updated on how the Member will support these issues.

MESSAGING IDEAS:

  • Let your federal elected officials know why creating more access to HCBS services is so important to you (or what it would mean to lose them).
  • Leave a brief message sharing that Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) and Competitive Integrated Employment are important to you.
  • Ask to be updated on how the Member will support these issues.
  • Disability issues are a large part of the American Jobs Plan, creating a need for all members of Congress to hear from you about Home and Community-Based Services and Competitive Integrated Employment. It is very important that all members of Congress are hearing from their constituents about how these investments will impact people and systems in your community.
