Get Out the Vaccine - #GOTVaccine

Monday, April 5, 2021

More Iowans are becoming eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine.  It’s time to "Get Out the Vaccine!"  The Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council and its national organization, the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) have launched to help people with disabilities, their loved ones, and caregivers learn more about the COVID-19 vaccines.

People with disabilities, their families and their caregivers may be feeling anxious or unsure about the COVID-19 vaccine and its safety. Vaccine decisions should be based on facts and trusted sources. Vaccination against COVID-19 is important so everyone can safely get back to living their lives and being a part of their community again. For people with certain medical conditions, vaccination may not be possible (but it may be critical for their family or caregivers and individuals in their communities). NACDD created to provide trusted sources to help you make the right decision for you, your family, and your community. We encourage you to use these resources, including those from trusted sources like the CDC, and talk to your healthcare provider about any questions you have about the vaccine. If you’re not sure whether you have an underlying health condition, review the CDC’s list of qualifications here. To learn more about the COVID-19 vaccine and what you can do after you’ve been fully vaccinated click here.
NEED HELP SCHEDULING A VACCINE? 211 is expanding its COVID-19 vaccine scheduling assistance! Iowans age 64 and younger with an underlying health condition who do not have Internet access or are struggling to schedule a vaccine appointment can now get help scheduling a vaccine appointment. The service is also available to Iowans 65 and older. Vaccine navigators are available every day from 8 AM to 5 PM. Just dial 211 or 800-244-7431 and select the vaccine prompt number 9. Translation services are available.
STILL HAVING TROUBLE? TAKE OUR VACCINE POLL: Have you had a tough time getting a COVID-19 vaccine? The Iowa DD Council wants to know what barriers individuals with disabilities are facing during the vaccination process. We want to learn more about the accessibility of the COVID-19 vaccine. If you are an individual with a disability, please complete our short poll about whether you've already received the vaccine or are having challenges with the vaccination process (if you provide support services or are a family member of a person with a disability, we encourage you to help them complete this poll). IOWANS WITH DISABILITIES IN ACTION PHOTO CONTEST: If you get a vaccine, send us a picture at! You’ll be entered into a drawing to win a $50 Visa gift card, and your picture might be featured on our Facebook page. Some tips: don't show your vaccine card in picture, show off your sticker, or make a sign letting us know you got your vaccine.  #SleevesUpIowa #GOTVaccine
